Learning ‘winning behaviours’ and more at the British Museum
TSA’s seventh conference took place last week at the British Motor Museum. This year, for the first time, we combined our conference with The Survey School’s annual Graduation Day in order to celebrate the students’ achievement of completing Courses 59-61 of the two year TSA Surveying Course.
Held in the magnificent Sky Suite at the British Motor Museum, this inaugural event was truly one to remember. TSA President Claire Fenwick delivered an introduction to the day, reflecting on her own professional journey, which included attending The Survey School.
Back by popular demand, our keynote speaker, Sir Clive Woodward, was the focus of every delegate’s attention as he outlined his fascinating philosophy on creating a winning culture by establishing ‘winning behaviours’. Drawing on his experiences with the national Olympic squad and England’s World Cup- winning rugby team, as well as numerous business ventures, Sir Clive revealed some of the similarities between sport and business. With both sectors focused on delivering the best results, he shared advice and guidance on how to get the best performance from your team.
Adopting ‘winning behaviours’ for TSA and its member companies
When Sir Clive challenged everyone present to come up with ‘winning behaviours’ for TSA, lively discussion ensued with some brilliant suggestions being put forward. Unsurprisingly, feedback has revealed 90% of delegates found the keynote speech ‘excellent’. Very positive comments on the whole day included the following: “The event was very uplifting”, “Sir Clive makes his success in sport relatable for a business and provides a few golden nuggets to easily implement”, “thank you for setting up such a fantastic day”, “already looking at adopting Sir Clive’s winning behaviours”.
Celebrating The Survey School graduation
The keynote speech was followed with The Survey School’s Awards ceremony, ably emceed by TSA Vice President, Olly Viney. All the students received their certificates, with three being singled out as award winners. The Vice President’s Award, which honours a student who faced challenges but showed unwavering commitment and resilience, was awarded to James Baguley by Olly.
The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors Award for the Best Assignment was awarded to Connor Savage by Alison Watson, CICES President, who also provided some insight into progress being made in education, skills and training in her speech. Connor’s winning piece of work was described by judges as ‘a model of what can be achieved’.
The Survey Association/Leica Geosystems Best Student Award was awarded to Liam Booth of Axis Surveys, presented by John Fraser of Hexagon. With a final course average of 93%, Liam ranks among the highest achievers since the TSA Surveying Course inception in 2001.
CEO Rachel Tyrrell says,
“Our annual conference is an opportunity to celebrate success and work together to address challenges. This year, with The Survey School graduates in attendance, we could honour their hard work, as well as enjoying their energy and enthusiasm as they embark on the next step in their professional careers. With the skills shortage at a record high, it is very encouraging to see evidence of such talent and dedication being nurtured at The Survey School.
“Sir Clive’s presentation on winning behaviours was extremely well-received and going forward we are already looking at ways to incorporate his advice and tips into our culture.”
The lunch break allowed time for members to network, followed by an opportunity to visit the museum’s internationally renowned display of cars before departure in the afternoon.
