It might be cold and dark outside, but January shines bright with opportunity for TSA and its members, with the start of the Council Elections for the year.
Every year all TSA full members are invited to nominate representatives to stand for election to Council. TSA Council members are elected for a three-year term, and once this has ended, they are asked to either stand again or they may choose to stand down. Co-opted members are required to formally stand for election at the next AGM.
The invitation to stand this year went out to full members on Monday 29 January 2024 and the deadline for nominations is Monday 12 February. If there are enough nominations put forward, the election will take place between Monday 26 February – Monday 11 March 2024. This will be carried out by postal ballot. New Council members will then be officially appointed at the AGM on Wednesday 27 March, which this year takes place at Silverstone. The AGM will also see the appointment of the President and Vice-President.
Council is made up of a group of 12 individuals, from a variety of backgrounds, experiences and opinions. They meet four times a year and the expectation is that every Council member will attend the meetings in person. There are three sub-committees, which meet online a few days before Council – Membership and Internal Affairs (MIA), PR and Technical. Finance sits within MIA.
Rachel Tyrrell, TSA Secretary General said: “The role of Council members is extremely diverse. The agendas are detailed, varied and wide-ranging – and the conversations and debates even more so! TSA is driven by the energy from Council, which has seen the association continually re-shape and refine the ambitions and goals, ensuring that TSA membership is packed with value.
“I would urge anyone interested in making a difference to consider standing for election. We have had some keenly contested elections in recent years, a sure sign that our members are engaged and prepared to volunteer their time for the greater good. We always need new ideas and a fresh take, but ones that are built on the solid foundations that see TSA promote and champion the land surveying profession.”
