Last week saw our annual Health, Safety and Wellbeing Day take place at Leica Geosystems in Milton Keynes. We had an excellent number of members attending to find out all about promoting a positive safety culture in the workplace.
The morning session was led by Martin Mulholland from MD Safety Management, who outlined the huge costs, both financial and human, that arise from work-related illness and injury. He provided extremely useful information on legislation and HSE updates and how they should be incorporated into policies and procedures. With a reminder of the measurable benefits that arise from undertaking improvements to safety culture, he went on to offer valuable insights into the important role leadership teams play in influencing attitudes when it comes to health and safety.
In the afternoon, Jenny Evans, from Rainbows End Coaching, led a session on emotional wellbeing. It was physically interactive and very engaging. As well as having a lot of fun, she also left us with a variety of excellent tools to help us manage emotional wellbeing, despite the stress that we all encounter in our day to day lives. She also encouraged us to look out for others we work alongside, what warning signs we should take note of and act on, and always to remember that we are all human.
In feedback, members clearly valued the opportunity that the day provided to take time out of the usual working week and reflect on health, safety and wellbeing. All these issues are inextricably linked, and a good business will always give them due time and attention.
As ever, our members particularly enjoyed the opportunity to have plenty of discussion with their peers during the sessions. Comments made afterwards included that the day was “beneficial, keeping us up to date with the latest policy and good practice procedures.”
