If you are involved in the surveying profession, you will hopefully already know about The Survey Association (TSA). The Survey Association is the go-to community for surveying businesses in the UK. It is the only trade body for commercial land survey companies in the UK and was formed in 1979. Membership provides a wide range of services and benefits to you and your employees. Probably the most popular benefit for its members are the annual events.
With regular TSA events held throughout the year, as well as its AGM and Annual Conference, there exists the perfect opportunity to meet and network with other individuals and companies within the surveying profession. These events also provide an opportunity to discuss the most important topics, hear from the best speakers, and are all held at great venues across the UK. The last conference was held in the Autumn of 2023 at The British Motor Museum in Warwick. It featured keynote speaker astronaut Sir Tim Peake, and it was a great opportunity to meet other TSA members in an impressive setting.
Let’s start the New Year by sharing some key dates for our members in 2024.
Invitation to stand for Council
The first date for the diary is our Council meeting on 24 January. The invitation to stand for Council will be sent out to all Full Members on 29 January.
Every year Full members are invited to nominate representatives to stand for election to Council. Council members are elected for a three-year term, once this has ended, they are asked to either stand again or they may choose to stand down. Co-opted members are required to formally stand for election at the next AGM. If there are more nominations than places, then an election is held by postal ballot. We have had some keenly contested elections in recent years, a sure sign that members are engaged and prepared to volunteer their time for the greater good.
The results take effect from the AGM each year, along with the appointment of the President and Vice-President. The deadline for nominations is 12 February, if there is an election it will take place between 26 Feb and 11 March.
Council is made up of a group of 12 individuals, from a variety of backgrounds, experiences and opinions. They meet four times a year and the expectation is that every Council member will attend the meetings in person.
Health, Safety & Wellbeing Day hosted by Leica Geosystems
The statistics around mental health are frightening, and this is particularly true within the construction sector. As part of our commitment to help our members, we will be holding another Health and Wellbeing Day on 28February 2024. These are always extremely valuable days, bringing members up to date with Health and Safety legislation, with the opportunity to embrace Wellbeing in the afternoon. There is real value in these smaller events, allowing attendees to engage in a different way with each other with time and space to talk.
The day will be packed with discussions, activities and exercises designed to support our mental health and that of those around us too, from colleagues to friends and relatives. The intention is to find out what we can do to sustain positive emotions and deal with stress and anxiety. We will also think about the qualities we need to lead our teams and practice some coaching techniques so we can support each other too.
27 March, TSA AGM at Silverstone with a brand new format and ‘Geo: Influence’ theme
Last but certainly not least, in our upcoming dates for 2024 is our Annual General Meeting (AGM). Last year it was held at Anfield Football Club in Liverpool, an impressive venue and we had the largest turnout we have ever had for an AGM. TSA members travelled from all over the UK to the hallowed home of The Reds. This year’s AGM will be held at Northamptonshire’s Silverstone, the legendary home of the British Grand Prix, MotoGP events and is known as the home of British motorsport. It promises to be a truly spectacular event with hands on involvement on the day. It’s going to be an exciting date in March!
Members will be emailed when registration is open for each event. If you are not already a TSA member and would like to find out more, please visit the website.
